Lacombe city council has approved amendments to the North Area Structure Plan (NASP), helping advance closer to the development of a new fire station on Woodland Drive.
Two sections of the NASP were amended to allow the land use for the new station.
The land can now be used for an emergency facility and isn’t limited to use solely as future cemetery lands.
“These administrative changes help pave the way for our community’s new fire station,” Mayor Grant Creasey said.
“It is important for the city to go through these steps to ensure this critical infrastructure can serve our residents for years to come.”
The new fire station to be constructed at 4410 Woodland Drive will not affect future cemetery plots as the current land is used as a baseball diamond.
North and east baseball diamonds will be unaffected.
The specific area was chosen following a stakeholder survey that saw 87% of respondents select it as their first choice over multiple properties. The following parameters guided the selection process for each location:
- Response Time Performance
- Safe Location
- Access to Major Roadways
- Residential Impact
- Land Availability
- Future Development Impacts
To address residents' concerns, a new Standard Operating Guideline for the Lacombe Fire Department will be drafted to ensure increased safety and noise reduction. Lights and sirens will only be used when required at nighttime hours.
“Council looks forward to celebrating the opening of this facility with all of our stakeholders in the near future.” said Mayor Creasey.
Construction of the new fire station is tentatively scheduled for Fall 2025.
