Alberta is beginning 2025 as the national leader in housing starts, according to new data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

From January to March, Alberta accounted for more than 25 per cent of all housing starts in Canada — despite representing less than 13 per cent of the country’s population.

This strong performance follows a record-breaking 2024 for housing construction and reflects the Alberta government’s ongoing efforts to increase housing supply and improve affordability for residents across the province.

While other provinces saw significant year-over-year declines in housing starts, Alberta’s housing starts rose by 18 per cent in the first quarter.

This increase underscores Alberta’s commitment to creating a more responsive, efficient and investment-friendly housing environment.

“Our government is working tirelessly to make the dream of home ownership a reality for Albertans,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “We are clearing the way for more homes to be built faster to help Albertans find housing that meets their needs and budgets. After a record-breaking 2024, today’s housing starts numbers are just more proof that Alberta’s plan to build homes is working.”

Alberta’s government is investing $1.2 billion over the next three years to support the construction of more than 6,300 new affordable housing units through Budget 2025.
