Red Deer County is excited to announce the launch of its Fire Cadet Program, a unique opportunity for local teens to gain valuable experience in fire and emergency services. This free program combines classroom theory with hands-on training, preparing participants for future careers in protective services.
A key feature of the program is the opportunity to earn the NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 Certification, accredited by ProBoard and IFSAC. This certification is a significant credential for those pursuing careers in the fire service, and upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be well-positioned to join Red Deer County Protective Services.
“As someone who started my career as a work experience student, I have a special place in my heart for these programs. I am truly excited to see this come to fruition,” said Drayton Bussiere, Fire Chief, Red Deer County. “If you know a student who might be interested in learning the values of commitment, pride, and teamwork, the Fire Cadet Program is designed to not only train the next generation of emergency responders but also instill essential qualities such as leadership, community involvement, mentorship, and cooperation.”
The training will primarily take place at Fire Station 6, located in the Clearview Industrial area, with additional practical sessions held at stations close to the cadets' residences. Red Deer County will provide all textbooks, uniforms, and reading materials, with cadets only needing to bring their own polishable black steel-toed boots.
This initiative is part of Red Deer County’s ongoing commitment to community safety and youth development, offering a valuable head start for those dedicated to making a difference in public service.
