Newcomers to Red Deer now have improved access to vital health services thanks to a new Alberta Health Services (AHS) pilot program launched at Johnstone Crossing Community Health Centre.
The Inbound Call Interpreter service, introduced last month, allows callers to select from a menu of seven languages when phoning the health centre. The options include Arabic, Ukrainian, Tigrinya, Tagalog, Spanish, French and English. Once selected, the caller is connected with a medical interpreter who helps them navigate the service.
“When we reviewed our programs and services, we identified some individuals called in to our switchboard but didn’t choose an option or leave a message because they didn’t have a level of comfort with English,” said Kandice Wilson, Public Health Director, AHS Central Zone.
“We turned to AHS’ Interpretation and Translation Services to find a way to decrease those barriers between critical health services and our clients whose first language is not English. The ultimate aim is better health outcomes.”
Callers can reach the community health centre at 403-356-6300. Services offered through the clinic include newborn care, postpartum support, immunizations and nutrition services.
Though AHS has used medical interpreters for years, this is the first time the organization has introduced a multilingual inbound call menu.
“Though AHS has used interpreters for many years, this service is a first for the organization and fills a specific need to help clients navigate in a way that’s most helpful for them,” said Kayathiri Ganeshamoorthy, Provincial Program Lead, AHS Interpretation and Translation Services.
“In addition to our country’s official languages, we are offering interpretation services in the languages most spoken in the region. We hope this increases access to critical services, and makes health and wellness more equitable for all families.”
The program will be piloted for one year and evaluated for effectiveness. If successful, it could be expanded to more locations across Alberta.
Alberta Health Services provides care to more than four million residents across the province. Current organizational priorities include reducing emergency department wait times, improving EMS response, expanding surgical access and improving patient flow through the health system.
