This year marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, taking place on Tuesday, April 22.

The 2025 theme is Our Power, Our Planet,” highlighting the shift toward renewable energy sources and the importance of building a sustainable future.

There are many ways to take part in Earth Day, whether by joining an event or making small, meaningful changes at home. Here's how you can contribute:

Ways to Get Involved:

At Home:

  • Practice the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  • Use active transportation – walk, bike, carpool or take public transit
  • Plant a tree or start composting
  • Clean up garbage or debris around your home or neighbourhood

Local Earth Day Events Around Central Alberta:

Blackfalds

  • Clean up Blackfalds – Residents are invited to help clean the community. Call FCSS Blackfalds at 403-600-9066 to register and take part.

Red Deer

  • Spring cleanup campaign – Volunteers can register online to help clean public spaces across the city. Free cleanup supplies provided.

  • Earth Day rally & presentation – Hosted by the Council of Canadians Red Deer chapter

    • Rally: 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. at Red Deer City Hall

    • Presentation: 6:15 to 8:00 p.m. at the downtown library branch

Sylvan Lake

  • Earth Day celebration at the Health & Wellness Healing Hub

    • 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.: Pot and plant a flower or tree. Seeds and soil provided.

    • 5:30 p.m.: Medicine walk led by Indigenous Knowledge Keeper Clare Butterfly, offering stories and insights into the cultural and medicinal significance of local plants.

Olds

  • Olds Library Earth Day Celebration – Free drop-in events for all ages

    • 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Plant a seed to take home and grow

    • 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.: Plant swap – bring a plant, seeds or cuttings to share and exchange
