As Lacombe Golf and Country Club opens its 100th season, staff are welcoming a spring snowfall that may come as a surprise to some.
“Unpopular opinion—it is slightly welcomed,” said head professional Weston Gillett. “Like any type of moisture you can get in April, will kind of help the course long term, which is great.”
Despite colder temperatures and temporary course closures, Gillett said the snow is more of a benefit than a setback.
“No, it won’t damage the course at all, but it’s super beneficial,” he said. “Being snow, it soaks in a lot slower versus a hard rain. Lots of it just runs away.”
The course was closed Tuesday but was expected to open back up on Wednesday.
The season began with a strong turnout on Friday, with 240 golfers taking part in opening day activities.
“Friday, the opening day, was probably one of the busiest opening days I’ve ever been a part of, regardless whether it be here or somewhere else,” Gillett said. “Just with the beautiful temperatures, every single tee time was booked. The driving range was packed and had about a 30-minute wait just to get on it. The new restaurant—it was quite full of people, and it was just a lot of good energy around.”
Gillett said the rest of the weekend was quieter as temperatures dropped, but players were still out enjoying the course.
Visitors also shared their thoughts on course conditions and recent updates to the clubhouse.
“Course is in fantastic shape,” Gillett said. “Compliments and lots of people sending us messages to send the kudos to our superintendent, Connor Winslow, about how great the condition the course is in this spring. Positive feedback about the new facelift in the lounge as well.”
