There’s been a shakeup in the world of baby names in Saskatchewan.

After nine years at the top, Olivia has finally been dethroned. Sophia takes over as the most popular name for girls in 2024, while Olivia settles into second place. Over on the boys’ side, Henry made a huge leap—from 18th place last year all the way to number one. That bump pushed Oliver down to second after holding the top spot in 2023.

Long-time favourites Liam and Noah are still going strong, holding onto the third and fourth spots for boys. Levi rounds out the top five.

For the girls, some big movers include Ellie, jumping from 19th all the way up to fifth, and Hazel, who climbed from 20th to sixth. Isla also gained ground, landing in fourth place. Harper’s popularity continued to grow, rising from 17th to eighth.

On the flip side, Ivy dropped from fifth to 17th. But there were some sweet surprises too—Lainey made the top 20 for the first time ever, sneaking in at number 20. And after a few years off the list, both Sadie and Grace made a comeback, showing up at 10th and 14th.

Some names that were on the list last year didn’t make the cut this time, like Brielle, Nora, Evelyn and Sophie.

There was also movement among the boys. Muhammad climbed from 19th to 13th, and Daniel reappeared on the list for the first time since 2017, coming in at number 20. Asher, Alexander, Brooks and Elijah also returned after some time away. Meanwhile, names like Lincoln, Emmett, Ethan and Luke dropped off, and Leo fell from fourth to 16th.

In total, there were 13,189 live births registered in the province in 2024 (as of April 5), slightly up from 13,080 in 2023. That number doesn’t include Saskatchewan moms who gave birth out of province, and eHealth is still finalizing late-year registrations.
