Residents in southwest Saskatchewan go to the polls in today's Canadian federal election.

The four candidates in a new riding of Swift Current-Grasslands-Kindersley have made their final pitches.

"Everywhere I've been, from the north to the south and even the eastern and western sides of the riding, there is tremendous support for the Conservative party," said incumbent MP Jeremy Patzer. "For the vision that we have to put Canada first and capitalize on the vast potential that exist in this country."

Patzer was twice elected MP for the former riding of Cypress Hills-Grasslands and is running to represent a new riding with different boundaries.

"I represent all the people for this area and I'm able to work to get results on the issues that matter to people," he noted. "And I've been able to do that as an opposition member. I look forward to the opportunity to be in government and have an even greater impact."

This is the second election for NDP candidate Alex McPhee who thinks a focus on health is one reason voters should consider his party.

"Our healthcare-focused plan of dental care and pharma care," McPhee said. "In a time of global uncertainty, I think taking care of our own people is a great thing to be focused on."

He feels it is especially relevant during a turbulent time around the world.

"If all we have is ourselves, let's build up together," McPhee said. "I think the NDP's plan for dental care and pharma care is something that has deep historical ties in Saskatchewan, and I like it."

Liberal Party candidate William Caton sees Canada's relationship with US President Donald Trump as a significant part of this election.

"(Liberal leader) Mark Carney needs a strong government to deal with Trump," he said.

The veteran political candidate understands he may be a long shot in this riding.

"It's a big hill for me to climb in this constituency," Caton said. "The Conservatives regularly get between 70 and 80 per cent of the vote, but I do think it's important the Liberals who do live in this constituency stand up and be counted this time."

Independent Maria Rose Lewans has also put her name forward on the ballot for Swift Current-Grasslands-Kindersley this year.

You can vote until 7:30 PM tonight.
