The Estevan Motor Speedway is roaring back into Estevan this weekend, with its first races of the year. The raceway will look to take advantage of some great weather on the weekend to keep the tracks clear.

President Brad Pierson says they've had to work with the forecast when planning out the start of the races.

"Well, we're just looking to kick off our season, surprisingly looking for some great weather with it. We did bump up our start times for the first couple of events just because we're usually challenged by lower temperatures. So it's a 5 p.m. start night, which a lot of our fans have asked for in the past."

Work has gone into the Speedway over the summer with some community help to get that ready earlier this spring.

"Last weekend, there was a big project improving the front straightaway. We're doing some work on corners one and two, just putting in some new clay. We have a premier racing service, but we just touched up. But long story short, things are looking really great for the upcoming weekend."

The first races of the season will be open for a number of different categories, with Pierson talking about what people can expect.

"We're running all five of our classes, from slingshots, hobby stocks, sport mods, stock cars, and modifieds. One thing that our fans are really going to be excited about is a big rise in our stock car numbers. Typically, we didn't run big stock car numbers, it's probably one of our most competitive classes."

Pierson says that the opening night will include five new racers, mixing locals and regulars dipping their toes into the categories.

The races are progressing well, and Pierson says that the facilities around the races are also in good shape.

"We've done a lot of work out there, and our grounds are looking really good. A big tree project, a big tree pruning project last few weeks, all those kinds of things."

The Speedway is posting their concessions menus ahead of time on Facebook with plenty of variety planned out for the season.

"We anticipated more of a cooler night on Saturday than it is. But it's Chili night, and the next weekend is Mac and Cheese night, and footlong hot dogs, and chili dogs, and I could just go on and on and on. One of our favourite nights is pulled pork and coleslaw, so just lots of crazy things."

Pierson says he's also excited to be hosting sponsored races, with the full schedule available to see on their Facebook page.
