The Town of Olds recently conducted a housing survey and heard a clear message from residents: housing is becoming harder to find, more expensive, and often doesn’t meet people’s needs.
Key findings from the survey include:
- Nearly half of respondents are spending more than 30 per cent of their income on housing.
- Many are feeling the pressure of rising rents, utility costs and property taxes.
- Renters are struggling to find suitable homes. Some are commuting from other communities, living with family or staying in temporary accommodations.
- There is a gap between the housing that is available and what residents actually need — particularly for smaller households, seniors looking to downsize, and young families starting out.
- Respondents expressed a desire for more affordable housing options such as duplexes, townhouses and secondary suites.
Based on the results, the town has developed a draft housing strategy and is now inviting residents to provide feedback.
