Lacrosse is set to take over Sylvan Lake from May 9 to 11, with the return of "War on the Shore".
Now in its sixth year, the tournament—hosted by Sylvan Lake Lacrosse—will see up to 320 players, along with their friends and families, come to town.
Corrine Nolte, Vice-President of Sylvan Lake Lacrosse, looks forward to the event, even though it falls on Mother’s Day weekend.
“It's my fifth year that I will be part of the tournament as a mom as well, and it's actually fun to see and watch your kids play lacrosse and do something that they love to do for the whole weekend.”
The tournament features U15 and U17 players, aged 12 to 16, and will include two home teams and 14 visiting teams from across Alberta.
“We try and encourage the teams from Calgary, Medicine Hat, Edmonton and further away to come and participate so we can have a variety of talent and geography in our town,” says Nolte.
The free event takes place at the NexSource Centre in Sylvan Lake, with action beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 9, and the official opening ceremonies led by the Mayor of Sylvan Lake at 4:30 p.m.
Tournament play continues throughout Saturday and includes a fastest shot competition, with medal games taking place Sunday afternoon, May 11.
Players, families, and spectators will also be able to take part in a raffle table where all the proceeds will be going back towards Sylvan Lake lacrosse, to help keep fees lower for players, help pay for floor fees and development, which includes goalie clinics and coaches' clinics.
With continued growth, Sylvan Lake Lacrosse is now the second-largest Lacrosse association in central Alberta.
