The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating an RCMP in-custody death that occurred in Melfort on Tuesday, May 6.
Melfort RCMP were summoned to a report of 44-year-old man disturbing the peace at a residence on Bemister Avenue West at 9:00 am.
Police discovered the man who had broken the front window of the residence.
The man was taken into police custody and transported to the Melfort Detachment. EMS was contacted and transported the man to hospital for assessment.
RCMP were notified shortly afterwards a report of disturbance by the same man. He was taken into police custody and transported back to the Melfort detachment at 10:45 am.
The 44-year-old man was located unresponsive around 5:10 p.m. by RCMP officers and CPR was started immediately and EMS contacted.
He was transported to hospital where he was declared deceased.
The Police Act, 1990, mandates the Saskatchewan RCMP to notify SIRT, who will investigate the circumstances of this in-custody death.
SIRT will provide further details as the investigation unfolds.
