As seeding season begins in Saskatchewan, SaskPower is reminding everyone to stay safe when working near power lines.
Last year, there were 262 farm-related incidents involving power infrastructure, a slight decrease from 268 in 2023, according to SaskPower. Most of these incidents occurred in the spring.
"Safety at SaskPower is our number one priority. So, if we can share the message with farmers and other large equipment operators working in the fields this spring, we're absolutely happy to do it," said Scott McGregor, spokesperson with SaskPower.
To ensure safety during spring seeding, SaskPower recommends the following tips:
- Plan your route ahead of time using the Look Up and Live map.
- Lower or retract equipment when crossing or working around power lines.
- Have a spotter to provide a second set of eyes on the ground.
- Take routine breaks to avoid fatigue.
- If moving a large load around power lines, request a temporary line lift.
In the event of line contact, operators should remain in their vehicle and dial 911 immediately. If a fire ignites due to line contact, follow these safe exit procedures:
- Swing the vehicle door open without touching the outside of the vehicle.
- Ensure no wires are in your way.
- Stand in the doorway, cross your arms in front of your chest, and put your feet together.
- Jump as far from the vehicle as possible, landing with your feet together, ensuring you don't touch the vehicle.
- With your arms still crossed and feet together, hop at least 10 meters away from the vehicle.
- Call 911 immediately.
- Do not return to the vehicle until the area has been declared safe.
"We understand completely that seeding is a busy and stressful time and that no one sets out to start their workday with the intent on running into a power pole or clipping a line," stated McGregor.
"Sometimes just trying to get the seed in the ground or crop sprayed that is all people think about. We just really want farmers and producers to make safety their priority this farming season."
