Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Lacombe now has registration open for its “Kids N’ Kops” Summer Day camp.

The annual event gives kids an inside look at forensic science, police scenarios, team building and crime solving.

Open to youth aged eight to eleven, the four-day camp partners with the Lacombe Police Service, the Blackfalds RCMP and the Blackfalds peace officers.

Jen Harty, Community Engagement Director for BBBS Lacombe, says the camp is the highlight of the summer, and this year it will run from July 7 to 10.

Kids who are residents of Lacombe, Lacombe County and Blackfalds, and who have not previously taken part in the camp, are welcome to register.

While there is a cost to register, Harty says there is help available. “We don't want finances to be a barrier in any way, so Big Brothers Big Sisters does offer campership, and we can subsidize 25 to 75 per cent to those who need the extra support.”

During the camp, kids will be involved in different police scenarios, such as a noisy party, where they get to see how officers would respond, complete with volunteers playing out the roles.

The camp also introduces kids to police responsibilities in a fun way.

It includes interactive activities and presentations and ends on the fourth day with a graduation ceremony to celebrate their work over the week.

“We see the amazing collaboration between Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Lacombe Police Services, Blackfalds peace officers and Blackfalds RCMP just coming together and really focusing on the youth for this camp,” says Harty.

The camp has limited space for only 24 kids and for more information or questions you can contact Jen Harty at 403-782-7870.
