Manitoba health officials are expanding eligibility for the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine as case numbers continue to climb across the province. Infants as young as six months old who live in higher-risk regions are now able to receive the vaccine earlier than usual.
The change applies to infants from six months to under 12 months of age residing in the Southern Health–Santé Sud (SH-SS) and Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority (IERHA) regions.
The province is also including infants in the same age group who regularly travel to or have close contact with people living in those two health regions.
Early dose does not include varicella protection
The early MMR dose now available does not include protection against varicella, or chickenpox, since the combined measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (MMRV) vaccine is not recommended for children under 12 months.
All children who receive the early dose will still need to complete the standard immunization schedule with two doses of MMRV vaccine.
"All infants should still receive two doses of MMRV after their first birthday and at least four weeks after the previous dose of any measles vaccine to ensure long-lasting immunity," says Manitoba Health.
