The Victoria Day long weekend usually signals the beginning of summer with many people hitting the lake for the first time for the year or planting their garden. But after a warm start to the month of May, the cooler temperatures will continue over the next few days.
Stephen Berg, Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada says it temperatures could dip down below 0 on both Friday and Saturday.
During the daytime, Berg noted that on Saturday it could reach only 10 which is 8 degrees below the high for this time of year.
After receiving some rainfall on Thursday, it appears that it will stop around the Humboldt area until Monday night carrying over into Tuesday.
Berg says it’s shaping up to be a mostly sunny and cool weekend. He added that a high-pressure system from the north is bringing in the cooler air that we’re experiencing.
While in the northern part of the province, there isn’t much rainfall anticipated after Thursday which isn’t good news for the ongoing wildfires. Berg said a wildfire that is happening northeast of Prince Albert is bringing local smoke to southern Saskatchewan, in particular Prince Albert, Melfort and Saskatoon. He added that the Humboldt and Wynyard could also see some smoke from that fire.
With the possible smoky conditions, Berg pointed out that anyone with underlying health conditions, the elderly, children, those who are pregnant, and those working outdoors should be careful with their exposure outdoors. They should pay attention to discomfort around their eyes, nose and throat and to be in tune with their body. He recommends going inside into a well filtered environment to help clear out the lungs.
