Overall crime is down in 2025, with significant decreases in property offences, drug violations and traffic incidents, despite a sharp rise in assaults last month.

Crime across most major categories is down this year, with reported offences against persons dropping 22 per cent and property crimes falling 20 per cent, despite a recent increase in assaults.

There were 45 crimes against persons reported so far in 2025, compared with 58 at the same time last year. The assault category saw the biggest change, falling from 13 in April 2024 to eight in April 2025. Year-to-date figures show a decrease from 44 to 33, marking a 25 per cent decline. The five-year year-to-date average stands at 35.4, a 6.8 per cent decrease from the current total.

Property crimes also declined, with 29 offences in April 2025 compared with 41 during the same month in 2024. Year-to-date totals dropped from 148 last year to 119 this year.

Theft of a motor vehicle saw the most notable reduction, falling 50 per cent, with 14 incidents at this time last year compared with seven in 2025.

Theft under $5,000 declined by eight per cent, dropping from 77 incidents year-to-date in 2024 to 71 this year. Month-to-month comparisons show a more substantial decrease, with 26 incidents in April 2024 and 12 in April 2025.

Mischief cases fell 33 per cent year-to-date, from 148 last year to 119 this year. April saw 11 incidents in both years.

Violations under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act dropped 67 per cent overall. Trafficking cases fell from nine in 2024 to five so far in 2025. Possession offences saw the most dramatic change, dropping from six to zero, a 100 per cent decrease.

Criminal Code traffic violations are down 26 per cent compared with this time last year.

Calls for service increased in April, with 634 this year compared with 558 in 2024. However, the overall year-to-date total dropped from 2,191 in 2024 to 2,009 in 2025, marking an 8.3 per cent decline. The five-year average for calls for service fell from 2,276 in 2024 to 2,009 in 2025, marking an 11.7 per cent decrease.
