A recent increase in break-ins at businesses and community facilities in the southeast has prompted the RCMP to outline steps to help the public keep their buildings safe.

Officers are actively investigating the incidents to determine if they are connected.

  • Consider installing an alarm system that covers both the interior and exterior of the building. Make sure it is always up-to-date and functional.

  • Consider installing video surveillance equipment.

  • Consider installing a fence with a locking gate if appropriate.

  • Post clear signage indicating that the business or facility has an active alarm system and video monitoring.

  • Ensure outdoor lighting is adequate and always in good working order.

  • Make sure doors and windows are securely locked during non-business hours. Deadlocks on doors and bars or film on windows provide extra protection.

  • Lock vehicles and equipment. Do not leave valuables, tools, or keys inside. Park them in well-lit areas when not in use.

  • Report crimes and suspicious activity to the police. When all crimes are reported, police officers gain a clearer understanding of the types and numbers of crimes occurring in their area. This information helps them plan future projects, initiatives, and education campaigns within the area and division.

The investigation is ongoing.

Officers ask anyone with information about any of these break-ins or who notices suspicious activity in their community to report it by dialing 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or through www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
