With Safe Boating Awareness Week beginning on Monday, the Saskatchewan RCMP are issuing safety tips and reminders. This is especially timely as May long weekend may see more people getting their boats in the water.

In a release sent by the RCMP, boaters and passengers are encouraged to follow safe boating protocols, including always wearing a life jacket, limiting passengers to not exceed the weight capacity of the watercraft, and having your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (POCC) onboard as it is a requirement for all motorized boat operators.

They also stress the importance of staying sober as it is illegal to operate a boat while impaired and punishable under the Criminal Code of Canada. Drivers should also avoid all distractions including cell phones.

They advise preparedness, by ensuring all safety and first aid equipment is on board, whether the watercraft is owned, borrowed, or rented, and knowing what to do in an emergency.

The RCMP outline what boat operators can do to prevent and avoid accidents, including being aware of speed and manner of driving, staying informed on the general guidelines for passing, docking, and anchoring, being mindful of smaller and non-motorized watercrafts, and exercising patience at public boat launches, docks and slips.

Appropriate adult to child ratios should be adhered to as children should not be left unattended, especially in an emergency. Also, be aware of fatigue from sun, wind, and waves that can impair motor skills and judgement.

If you experience or observe a boating emergency, call 911 immediately. For non-emergencies, contact 310-RCMP.
