The Cochrane Curling Club is calling on the town and Rocky View County to pause or reconsider the request for proposals (RFP) process for the SLS Centre operations to allow for proper community input.
In a letter dated May 14, the club raised major concerns about the lack of consultation with user groups regarding the proposed takeover of the SLS Centre’s operations by YMCA Calgary. The letter was addressed to town and county officials ahead of tonight’s committee-of-the-whole meeting. It originally wasn't going to be released in advance of tonight's meeting.

Signed by club president Kendall Waiting, the letter criticizes the process for its lack of transparency and public engagement, and outlines specific concerns.
“No formal consultation was conducted with core facility users such as the CCC prior to issuing the RFP,” the letter states. “This has left us without a platform to provide input or express interest or concerns with our continuing involvement in the SLSC curling facility, or for any other SLSC user groups.”
It goes on to say the criteria for selecting a new management proposal were not made publicly available in an accessible way, creating confusion and a perception of bias.
“This has also led to speculation, rumours, and community apprehension as to the process, what is to come, and the choice of moving forward with the YMCA,” the letter continues.
The club also raised concerns about the future of the On the Rocks Lounge, which overlooks the six sheets of curling ice.
“Depending on the outcome of this process—especially with the potential for the YMCA taking over management—we are concerned about the possibility of losing access or having our access to the SLSC curling facility and the On the Rocks Lounge restricted or limited,” it says. “This would have a major impact on the CCC and its membership totals, and could effectively dismantle a community-supported recreational program with deep historical roots and strong membership.”
The CCC says it remains committed to working collaboratively with the town, as long as any changes to centre management follow the guiding principles of being community-focused, transparent and fair.
Tonight’s meeting will mark the first public discussion by council on the proposed takeover by YMCA Calgary.
Following the information session, town administration is recommending council hold a special meeting on June 2 to make a formal decision.
However, during a question-and-answer session at a recent town hall with SLS Centre staff, Mayor Jeff Genung stated that council is scheduled to hold a formal vote during its regular May 26 meeting.
