As part of its ongoing commitment to high-quality public amenities, The City of Red Deer has made the decision to terminate its contract with the current operator of Heritage Ranch.
As a result, Heritage Ranch will temporarily close between May 26 and June 9 as the city undertakes a process to identify and secure a new operator aligned with the long-term vision for the site.
While facility-based programming and services will pause, public access to trails, green spaces, and parks will remain open daily, and portable washroom facilities will be provided on-site.
Termination of the contract has occurred after the operator was unable to meet the obligations of the contract.
"Heritage Ranch has long been a cherished part of the community, offering unique recreational and event experiences. This transition marks a significant shift, but also an opportunity to secure a new operator that can sustain and enhance the site’s long-term potential,” said Tara Lodewyk, city manager.
“While this temporary closure is necessary, we are acting quickly to find an operator that aligns with the community’s values and the vision we all share for this space.”
The following changes will take effect:
- Indoor operations, including summer camps, private event bookings, and ranch services will be cancelled until a new operator is secured.
- Passive use of the site, such as walking trails, green spaces, and public park access will remain open to the community.
- Portable washrooms will be available throughout the transition.
- Significant third-party bookings, such as the Spartan Races, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine feasibility.
To ensure a smooth transition and long-term operational stability, the city will issue an immediate Request for Proposals (RFP) to identify a new operator. While the process has begun, a new provider is not expected to be in place within the next 90 days.
“We know this facility matters deeply to residents and visitors,” added Lodewyk. “This transition is about strengthening the future of Heritage Ranch so that it can continue to serve the community in meaningful and lasting ways.”
