On the heels of bear sightings within the city of Regina and more recently in Biggar, a bear has been spotted within our region.

The Village of Drake released a notice that a black bear was spotted south of Drake early Monday morning (May 26).

When the bear was in Regina and eventually euthanized due to complications, the Ministry of Public Safety who oversees conservation officers, warned the public that if they encounter a bear, they should keep their distance and try not to scare the animal away.

People should make a wide detour, calmly back away, speak in low tones and not look directly at it. Most often, bears will move on without any intervention, the ministry said.

Inside of the village of Drake’s notice, they reminded residents to use caution when walking outside of the town, to not leave pets outside unattended and to not leave food or open garbage outside unattended.
