A Red Deer MLA has been appointed as Alberta’s new parliamentary secretary for constitutional affairs.

Premier Danielle Smith named Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South, to the role on May 21.

According to the province, the position will play a key role as Alberta continues to assert its constitutional jurisdiction in areas such as resource development—ensuring the province’s rights are protected and respected within the federation.

“I am committed to standing up for Alberta and ensuring our constitutional rights are respected and upheld,” Stephan said.

“The Constitution of Canada is to provide a check and balance against abuse of power by government and protect Alberta from destructive overreach by the federal government. It is vital that Alberta’s voice is strong and clear for the Constitution to be interpreted and applied fairly and with integrity.”

Cabinet policy committees are considered essential to the work of government. They review policy decisions, help set long-term strategic priorities and contribute to legislation and regulatory reviews.

“I am proud of the dedication of Alberta’s cabinet ministers and MLAs who are stepping up to take on additional responsibilities and work on behalf of Albertans,” Smith said.

A full list of cabinet ministers and members is on The Government of Alberta website.
