CUT KNIFE, Sask. — A 41-year-old man from Sweetgrass First Nation has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of a man east of Cut Knife over the weekend.

On May 31 at about 2 a.m., Cut Knife RCMP responded to a report of a serious assault in a field off Highway 40, east of the community.

Responding officers located an injured man at the scene. He was pronounced dead by EMS shortly after. The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Garnet Whitecalf of Sweetgrass First Nation. RCMP say his family has been notified and victim services have been made available to them.

An adult male was arrested at the scene, and the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

As a result, 41-year-old John Whitecalf, also of Sweetgrass First Nation, is charged with one count of first-degree murder under Section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

He appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on June 2.

RCMP have not released further details, and the investigation remains ongoing.
