Distracted driving and speeding are the focus of this month’s Safety Spotlight with SGI.

As the summer season in Saskatchewan draws near, SGI urges motorists to take some time to review some safety tips before hitting the road.

“The roads are busy this time of year. People will be out enjoying everything summer in Saskatchewan has to offer,” said JP Cullen, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund. “Let’s practice our best driving habits and make sure everyone has the chance to make happy memories this season.”

Some of the dangers that come with speeding include that it decreases the amount of time you have to react to a potential hazard and increases your chances of injury. Speeding also reduces your control of a vehicle, which adds to the risk of a collision and the severity of an injury.

Tips to keep in mind to prevent speeding include:

  • Ease off the gas pedal and follow posted speed limits.

  • Slow down in work zones to protect worker with construction season underway

  • Even with the school year almost over, school and playground zones will still be busy, so follow reduced speed limits in school zones if they’re year-round.

  • Adjusting to road conditions, while snow won’t be a problem, rain could affect traction and visibility, especially on gravel roads.

When it comes to distracted driving tips, some helpful reminders are:

  • Put the cellphone away while you’re behind the wheel.

  • Plan ahead. Make sure you have everything you need before hitting the road.

  • Keep an eye out for other users of the road including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycle riders.

  • Share the road with farm equipment, commercial vehicles, and vehicles hauling trailers or boats, keep patience in mind and give them space.

  • Take a break if you’re travelling a long distance.
