After a two-year absence, the CobraCats girls’ 15s rugby squad is heading back to provincials.

The Tier 1 team won the ASAA South Central Zone Championship on June 2 at the Calgary Rugby Union with a hard-fought 33–24 win over the Foothills Composite Falcons.

Assistant coach Brian Morgotch said the CobraCats surged ahead late after clinging to a narrow 24–22 lead with about eight minutes to go.

“We have an awesome core of players — some really strong Grade 12s, a great group of 11s — and when you put that combo together, it really shows on the field,” he said.

The CobraCats last won the zone banner in 2022 and have been to provincials twice before. Last year, Foothills edged them out; the season before, it was Bert Church.

That history made this win especially meaningful for Cochrane Grade 12 player Maddy Procter, who fulfilled her goal of returning to provincials in her final season.

“We went in wanting it more than Foothills did,” she said. “The score got close, but we pushed hard and came out ahead.”

The victory didn’t come without setbacks.

“We did suffer some injuries that will hurt us at provincials, unfortunately,” said Morgotch. “But it was great to get the banner. Whatever happens next, we’re proud.”

The CobraCats open their ASAA 4A championship run Friday in Lethbridge against Strathcona High. They’ll play two games to determine whether they advance to the medal or consolation round.
