Construction has begun in the 2A parking lot between 49B Avenue and 49C Avenue in downtown Lacombe.

Work will be completed in phases to help maintain as much parking as possible throughout the construction period.

Businesses will remain open during all phases of work.

Scope of Work:

  • Reconfiguration of the parking lot to allow through-traffic between 49B Avenue and 49C Avenue
  • Stormwater infrastructure replacement
  • Select sidewalk replacement
  • Addition of nine new parking stalls

Estimated Schedule:

  • Removals: First week of June
  • Stormwater Work: Mid-June to end of June
  • Base Work, Concrete, and Paving: Last week of June to first week of July

Construction Impacts:

  • Stormwater work will result in temporary parking loss and access restrictions.
  • Construction will be phased to maintain access to businesses and preserve a portion of available parking.

Pre-work on 49C Avenue also begins this week in preparation for the 49C Avenue Plaza Project, which officially starts on Tuesday.

The Plaza Project is part of Lacombe’s vision to create a walkable, pedestrian-friendly space that supports community events and highlights the city's historic downtown.

Plaza Project Highlights:

Traffic Calming & Pattern Changes:

  • Installation of decorative overhead lighting and concrete paving stones along 49C Avenue
  • Addition of nine new parking stalls
  • A new concrete bulb-out extending into both 50th Avenue and 49C Avenue to help slow and direct traffic, improving pedestrian safety
  • Conversion of 49C Avenue into a one-way southbound street

Added Parking & Aesthetic Enhancements:

  • New parking stalls and overhead string lighting across 49C Avenue
  • Decorative paving, planting beds, and enhanced greenery to improve the area’s visual appeal

Sidewalk & Crosswalk Enhancements:

  • Shortened east-west crosswalk between BMO and the Flatiron Building
  • Removal of the east crosswalk on 50th Avenue at 50th Street
  • Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) added to the west crosswalk at 50th Avenue and 50th Street
  • Sidewalks widened by one metre on each side of 49C Avenue, with dropped curbs to improve pedestrian flow
