The Swift Current Fire Department has offered some assistance to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) to combat the widespread wildfires in the northern portion of the province.

Ryan Hunter, the fire chief for the Swift Current Fire Department, said two firefighter paramedics and a rehab unit were proposed to the SPSA, but the aid hadn't been accepted as of Wednesday afternoon.

"It's a unit that can go to the front line and assist if any firefighter has been injured, hurt, or has excessive smoke inhalation," he said. "What we would do is prepare to send the unit that would support the health and safety of the firefighters on the front line.

"It's a unit that has air conditioning, an onboard microwave for some food if they get hungry, hot water for coffee, tea, and hot chocolate if the program goes in the evening and it gets chilly," he said. "It also has onboard oxygen with full paramedic supplies."

Three large wildfires are ongoing in north Saskatchewan near Pelican Narrows, La Ronge, and McLennan Lake. If the offer for aid from Swift Current was accepted, Hunter was unsure where the duo of his members would be heading.

"Two of our members would be driving it up to the scene, and then it would be staged wherever the incident commander wants it," he said.
