Through the first week of the 2025 Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) season, the Saskatoon Berries are showing no signs of a sophomore jinx.
After dropping their first contest of the season, the Berries have won their last five games and are a half of a game back of the Medicine Hat Mavericks for first place in the Eastern Division.
Three local players have made some early season contributions to the Berries success.
Marek Yeager of Muenster got the start on opening day in Weyburn. The freshman of Hutchinson Community College took the loss that night after he gave up three earned runs through 4.1 innings but did manage to record six strikeouts.
Yeager’s had a better fate in his second start. On Wednesday he picked up the victory against the Fort McMurray as he tossed five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and for the second straight appearance had six strikeouts.
Dallen Rude, also from Muenster, has enjoyed an impressive start to his season. He has retired all six batters that he has faced. On Monday, the freshman of Colby Community College earned the win after pitching a scoreless inning. Then on Wednesday night, he finished off the game against the Giants by striking out all three batters that he faced.
Bruno native Cam Marshak has played in five games with the Berries, playing third baseman in two games and for three games he has been a designated hitter. Another freshman of Colby Community College, Marshak's best night at the plate was on Tuesday as he had three hits and scored a pair of runs. So far this season, Marshak is batting a .263 average.
The Berries will be on the road with three games this weekend. They head to Moose Jaw on Friday and then will be in Swift Current on Saturday and Sunday.
Next home game for the Berries will be on Tuesday as they welcome in Medicine Hat.
