With swimming events set for June 6 and 7 in Swift Current, the Special Olympics Saskatchewan Summer Games are underway, and athletes from Estevan are making the most of the opportunity.
The city’s 10-pin bowling team competed this past weekend in Regina, marking their first appearance at the Games in several years. Coach Jackie Thul said the team was thrilled to be back and proud to represent their community.
“They all did amazing,” Thul said. “This gives us a strong starting point, and we’ll keep practicing over the next four years to be ready for the next Games.”
Bowlers took part in individual, doubles and team events. A few came close to setting personal bests, and many celebrated high scores.
“There were some very impressive performances,” said Thul. “Having so many family members make the trip to Regina meant a lot to the athletes, too.”
Beyond the competition, the weekend was filled with meaningful moments and connections.
“One of our athletes recognized someone from Regina whose brother used to be on the bowling team in Estevan,” Thul said. “They had a great chat. It was special to see those kinds of reunions.”
The group trained from October to March during their regular season and added extra weekly practices throughout May to prepare.
Thul said the environment at the Games was nothing short of uplifting.
“Everyone was cheering for each other, no matter which community they were from,” she said. “There were high fives everywhere, and even the coaches were supporting athletes from other teams. It was a really positive, high-energy weekend.”
The athletes represented Estevan with pride.
“They were ecstatic to be chosen,” Thul said. “They couldn’t have been happier to represent their hometown.”
As the Games continue, Estevan will also be represented in the pool. One local swimmer and two athletes from Weyburn will compete during this week’s events in Swift Current.
