Country artist and songwriter Miles Canyon may be new to Alberta, but he's already turning heads across the province.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Canyon moved just north of Cochrane about a year ago and has quickly made a name for himself in the Western Canadian country scene.

The recognition keeps rolling in. Canyon was recently announced as a performer for Country Thunder Alberta.

“It’ll be my first time playing Country Thunder, and I’m excited,” he says. “I found out while I was at the Alberta Country Music Awards.”

His music career started over a decade ago as a member of a band that toured and recorded across the country, covering a wide range of genres.

But it was country music's roots in honesty and storytelling that pulled him in for good.

"It's the storytelling part of a country song that drives me," Canyon says. "That’s what I love about it."

Canyon's latest single, “Roaches and Willie,” captures that playful storytelling style.

"It's a light-hearted tune about if the end of the world came, there'd be nothing left but the cockroaches and Willie Nelson," Canyon says with a grin.

Soon after recording the demo, the song made its way to Nelson’s own Luck Ranch studio in Texas.

"I sent it to a buddy in the business, and he said, 'Funny timing, I'm pulling into Willie's ranch right now,'" Canyon says. "So he played it for him, and he really liked it."
