As Bow Valley High School’s Class of 2025 prepares to cross the stage on June 26, valedictorian Aliyah Grund is looking back on her high school journey with pride, gratitude, and a little surprise.
“It’s been a really good experience overall,” said Grund, who has called Cochrane home her entire life. “We’ve had some unique challenges, for sure, but I’ve always felt supported here.”
From navigating the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic to dealing with school construction noise during exams, Grund says her time at Bow Valley High has been anything but ordinary.
“There were definitely some weird moments,” she said with a laugh. “I didn’t see the bottom half of most people’s faces for a long time. And then this year, they always seemed to be drilling something during a test or even one of our diploma exams!”
Despite the disruptions, Grund thrived. A dedicated student and athlete, she’s been heavily involved in school life, playing sports like basketball, badminton, track, and soccer, while also volunteering with student council, and leadership events like Helping Hampers.
“I think getting involved really helped me connect with people and enjoy my time here,” she said. “That’s my biggest advice for younger students, just get involved. You’ll see a whole other side of the school.”
Grund admits she was caught off guard when she was chosen as valedictorian.
“I knew there were six other girls applying and they were all amazing candidates,” she said. “We all played sports together, were in classes together, I honestly didn’t expect to get it, but I’m really honoured.”
As for the big speech, Grund has a rough draft from the application process but says her focus lately has been on diplomas.
“I’m still working on it. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be fine-tuning it,” she said.

After graduation, Grund will stay close to home, commuting to the University of Calgary to study Exercise and Health Physiology. She’s considering a future switch to nursing but says she’s keeping her options open.
“I’m excited to keep learning and growing, but I’ll definitely miss the people here,” she said. “There are so many great teachers and staff, it really has been a great place to go to school.”
With just a couple of weeks left before she takes the stage, Grund says she’s feeling both nostalgic and excited.
“It’s a little surreal, honestly,” she said. “But I’m ready.”
