Estevan police responded to a range of incidents over the weekend, including a stolen vehicle investigation, impaired driving, domestic disturbances, and a damaged rail crossing.
On Friday, June 6, a 25-year-old man from Rockwood, Man., was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. The arrest stems from an investigation into a stolen vehicle reported on Jan. 26. Evidence found in the vehicle was processed by the Estevan Police Service’s forensic identification officer, and subsequent DNA analysis positively identified the suspect.
Police attended a non-reportable two-vehicle collision on Kensington Avenue. The drivers exchanged information, and no further police involvement was required.
A theft from a vehicle was reported and remains under investigation.
Later that day, officers responded to an intrusion alarm at a business. The building was found secure with no signs of forced entry. Police spoke with a person nearby but found no indication they were involved in any criminal activity.
On Saturday, June 7, a high-visibility impaired driving check stop and random vehicle stops were conducted. One driver was found to be operating a vehicle while under the influence of a drug and was charged after performing poorly on a standardized field sobriety test. Her driver’s licence was suspended for three days, and her vehicle was impounded for seven days. Additional charges are pending the results of blood samples collected during the investigation.
That night, the rail crossing at Highway 39 Bypass was damaged and closed for a significant period. EPS members directed traffic and investigated the cause, which was linked to an unsecured load on a semi-tractor trailer. The driver was located and charged with two vehicle offences.
Police also responded to a 911 call transferred from a youth in Estevan regarding a domestic disturbance. Officers determined a verbal argument had occurred between a parent and another child. Police mediated the situation and ensured the well-being of those involved.
In a second, unrelated domestic incident the same evening, officers again mediated a dispute. One person left the residence for the night, and alcohol was a factor.
Police and conservation officers attended the 600-block of 2nd Street for a report of an injured moose. The animal was found deceased on arrival, and arrangements were made for its removal and disposal.
A hit-and-run collision was reported in the parking lot of an east-end business. The incident remains under investigation.
On Sunday, June 8, police responded to a noise complaint involving a barking dog at a residence in the north end of the city. The owner was warned under the city’s noise bylaw.
Later during the night shift, a suspended driver with active warrants for failing to attend court was stopped and arrested. He was processed for both offences and released with an August court date. His vehicle was impounded as a result of driving while suspended.
Throughout the weekend, multiple compliance checks were completed on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions. All were found to be in compliance.
