The Queer Neighbours Society of Red Deer (QNSRD) is holding its first free inclusive clothing swap Thursday, June 12 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Pioneer Lodge.
The non-profit group advocates for all members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Red Deer and Central Alberta, and is hosting the event to provide, trade and swap clothing for those within the community.
Maia Johnson, a volunteer with QNSRD who came up with the idea, says the event is about finding clothing that feels comfortable and affirming.
“The concept is that if you swap clothing with someone who’s roughly the same size as you, who may be transitioning in the opposite direction, or just doesn’t like their clothes anymore, all of that, it’s a mutually beneficial exchange,” Johnson said.
She says buying or trying on clothing in stores can be stressful, especially where people may not feel supported in their choices or style.
“It can be hard to get clothing for yourself, and also to get rid of clothing,” she said, noting the community tends to have a very unique style.
QNSRD held a clothing drive in May to ensure they had a selection of items ready before the event.
Shoppers are encouraged to bring items they no longer want and are welcome to browse and take free clothing to add to their wardrobe.
There are no strict rules, people don’t have to trade item for item, but they are asked to bring their own bags to take their new finds home.
Johnson says QNSRD is excited about the event, and any leftover clothing will become the beginning of the group’s new inclusive community clothing bank.
