Echo Food Rescue of Lacombe wins Emerald Award for environmental excellence.
Echo Food Rescue has been named a recipient of an Emerald Award, presented by the Alberta Emerald Foundation.
The award celebrates environmental leadership and recognizes individuals and organizations making measurable, positive change in their communities.
For Echo Food Rescue, that change comes through food keeping it out of landfills and getting it onto people’s plates.
Since launching in 2022, Echo Food Rescue has diverted nearly 500,000 pounds of food from the landfill.
In 2025 alone, the organization is on track to rescue 360,000 pounds, setting it up to reach 900,000 pounds saved by the end of the year.
“We’re beyond grateful to the Alberta Emerald Foundation for this recognition,” said Christina Sturgeon, manager of Echo Food Rescue.
“This award isn’t just about Echo, it’s about our volunteers, community partners, and every single person who believes in the power of change when a community comes together.”
If the organization continues at its current pace, it expects to reach the milestone of one million pounds of rescued food by summer 2026.
To celebrate, Echo Food Rescue is planning a community-wide event.
“When we hit that number, we’re throwing a party and everyone’s invited,” said Sturgeon with a smile.
Echo Food Rescue also extended its thanks to the community for its support.
Together, we’re not just reducing food waste we’re feeding people, strengthening our community, and protecting our planet.
