The 2025 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Draft will take place on Tuesday afternoon.
This past weekend at the annual general meeting, the organizations ratified a motion to adjust the SJHL’s policy on the automatic protection of players who reside in the zones where the teams are located.
Effective immediately, the new auto-protect rule has each team will be permitted to add and protect two local players on their SJHL 50-player list yearly before the SJHL Draft. If a team wishes to protect a third auto-protect, this will come at the cost of a team’s first available draft pick.
In the past under the previous rule, all local eligible players were protected given they had room under teams 50-man list.
The Humboldt Broncos elected to protect defenceman Kohen Ruedig and forward Kade Baert.
Both players spent the past season with the U15 AA Humboldt Broncos squad. Ruedig had 40 points (19G-21A) in 29 games last season. He was selected by the Portland Winterhawks in the 4th round (81st overall) of the 2025 Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospects Draft.
Baert had 54 points (20G-34A) in 29 games last season.
The SJHL Draft begins at 1:00 pm, and it will be an eight-round draft, with two rounds of selections to be made of 2010 birth-year players, followed by six rounds of selections to be made of 2009 birth-year players.
The Humboldt Broncos hold the 6th overall selection.
