The Weyburn Beavers bounced back emphatically Tuesday night, routing the Moose Jaw Miller Express 13-1 at Tom Laing Park. It was a statement win that snapped a six-game skid and gave the home crowd at Tom Laing Park plenty to cheer about.
Head coach Cam Williams praised his team’s complete performance.
“The guys obviously came ready to play," Williams said after the game. "Coming off the off day and a tough week last week… it was good to kind of take a breath and enjoy this one.”
Weyburn’s offence exploded for 15 hits, highlighted by back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning from catcher Rob Gurney and left fielder Ryan Dauphinee, part of a three-run frame that put the game out of reach.
“We got out there, we were able to chew the log a little bit and go back to back,” Gurney said with a grin.
Dauphinee echoed the energy.
“The Beavs chewed the log tonight. And yeah, that's a team we want to beat.”
The Beavers’ bats were hot all night, with Brayden Mayencourt driving in two runs and both Ian Heck and Noah Brooks collecting multi-hit nights and RBIs. Alex Alva also contributed an RBI in the win.
While Heck went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs, his biggest contribution came on the hill. He pitched eight shutout innings, striking out nine and walking four.
“The boys clicked together offensively, and they had my back on defence,” Heck said. “We’re learning how to play together as a team… we’ve got probably 45 more games, and we're gonna figure it out.”
Weyburn's Keaton Husband finished the game off, pitching one inning, giving up one run and recording a strikeout.
With the win, the Beavers improve to 3-7 on the season, while Moose Jaw drops to 4-6. Weyburn will look to build on the momentum when they return to action later this week, hosting the Regina Red Sox at Tom Laing Park Thursday night.
