Residents in and around Cochrane are now under an Air Quality Warning, as smoke from wildfires continues to impact the region, significantly reducing visibility and air quality.

Environment and health officials say the situation has worsened from a previous advisory, with conditions now posing a health risk to all residents, regardless of age or health status, especially during periods of heavy smoke.

People most at risk include seniors, pregnant individuals, infants, young children, those with pre-existing health conditions, and anyone who works outdoors. These groups are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest pain, or shortness of breath.

Even mild symptoms like throat irritation, headaches, or a dry cough should not be ignored.

Health officials recommend the following precautions:

  • Limit time outdoors and avoid physical activity outside.

  • Reschedule or cancel outdoor events and sports.

  • Keep windows and doors closed; use a clean air filter or certified air cleaner indoors.

  • If you must be outside, consider wearing a properly fitted N95 mask.

  • Check on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours.

Residents are reminded to follow guidance from local authorities and stay informed through canada.ca/wildfire-smoke and airhealth.ca.
