The City of Lacombe has a new police chief following a Change of Command ceremony on Wednesday that marked the transition from outgoing Chief Lorne Blumhagen to incoming Chief Jason Dobirstein.

Chief Blumhagen is retiring after a remarkable 40-year career in policing, including 11 years with the Lacombe Police Service — three as inspector and the past eight as chief of police.

In a statement posted to social media, the Lacombe Police Service thanked Blumhagen for his dedication, leadership and unwavering commitment to public safety, noting he leaves behind a lasting legacy.

“We thank Chief Blumhagen for his outstanding service and wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement,” the statement read.

The appointment of Chief Jason Dobirstein marks a meaningful return to his roots — his father served as chief of the Lacombe Police Service in 1995.

Dobirstein brings more than 34 years of experience in law enforcement and is known for his strong leadership and commitment to community-focused policing.

The Lacombe Police Service congratulated both leaders — one for a career of exceptional service, and one as he begins a new chapter in the role.
