Mehtab East Indian Cuisine has hit another milestone in serving Cochrane.

This weekend, the long-time restaurant celebrated its 17th anniversary as a strong community beacon.

Coming to Cochrane from Calgary was a perfect fit for the family, said Jag Thind.

“We wanted to be in a small community and to live in a beautiful place like this. I always say this is the best place to work and live. It was amazing, and it still is.”

Mehtab is known for its generous contributions to many community events and activities. The family has also ensured people didn’t go hungry during hard times—efforts that stood out during the struggles faced by families during the pandemic.

“That’s our culture. Any Sikh temple you visit, there’s food for every single person, regardless of a person’s race or background. If we can do something for the people, why not?”

Jag and his wife, Gunjeet, took over Mehtab in June 2011 after the original owner encountered difficulties. Since then, they have made it a Cochrane institution with their Indian cuisine. More than half of the menu features family recipes, many from the North Punjabi region of India.

Over the years, they have earned numerous accolades and praise from both food critics and customers.
