Down 8-1 to the league leading Prince Albert Predators with 5:56 to go in the first period, the Swift Current Wolverines could have easily thrown in the towel.
Instead, they battled back to within a goal in the third period before eventually falling 16-12 in their final regular season game on the junior Prairie Gold Lacrosse League schedule.
"I thought it was good the way the boys didn't give up and came back," said Brock Smith of the Wolverines. "Ran it right back to them and they got scared in the end, so it felt good."
The Predators were attacking with ease in the early going to build that 8-1 lead before Swift Current turned the game around.
"We just had to hop up on them and start going man to man," Smith said. "Just started running them through the walls. Getting balls up the floor and guys were able to start scoring up front."
The Wolverines got the game to 12-11 midway through the third period and made it a game.
Grady Henderson scored 3 times for Swift Current, while Shane Cornelson and Ryder Turko each had 2 goals and 3 assists in the loss.
The Wolverines beat Regina 14-4 on Friday before Saturday's loss to finish their regular season schedule.
"I think we have good momentum going in the playoffs," Smith said. "We're playing the best we've played so far this year. If we get there we get there and hopefully we can make something of it."
Now all the Wolverines can do is wait as they lead Saskatoon by 3 points for the final playoff spot, but Saskatoon has 4 games in hand.
Saturday's game was broadcast live on Country 94.1 FM with Local Sports Live powered by OMT Projects.
