While the evacuation order remains in place for Creighton, a Swift Current resident from Creighton has faith that the community will rebuild from wildfires.
Ken Garinger grew up in Creighton and now works as the Superintendent of Human Resources for the Chinook School Division.
"It has been a bit challenging," Garinger said. "My parents still live there. They're evacuees and just that trepidation, that feeling of possibly losing what has been a family home for a very, very long time.
"You value the work that the firefighters have done and all of our services have done to really keep people safe up there. Everybody's anxious to get back. I'm talking to my parents. They're very anxious to get back home. My dad has lived up there for all 77 years of his life. Just so grateful for that work that they're doing to keep people's property safe and keep life safe in so many ways."
Despite all the challenges of the last few weeks, he is confident that the people will do all they can to get their lives back.
"One thing I know about the communities of Creighton," Garinger said. "When you're from that community or are part of that community, it's home. It quickly becomes home, and people will do everything they can to rebuild the life that they have. It's not going to drive people away. People will come back. Things will look very different. The people will find their way again."
The town reported a new fire start just outside of their limits yesterday that crews attended to immediately. Their evacuation order remains in place while some residents in other parts of the province can start returning home.
A recent radiothon helped raise over $680,000 through the Canadian Red Cross to support wildlife evacuees.
"The support that they will continue to need is critical," Garinger said of the fundraising efforts.
As the community has come together to deal with the fires, it has been a reminder of what it means to come from Creighton.
"It's a place where you're proud to be from," Garinger said. "I think you'll see that pride moving forward."
