Alberta RCMP are warning the public about a rise in organized gold and jewellery scams happening in parking lots across the province.
The scam typically involves individuals, often posing as stranded motorists, approaching victims to ask for money. In return, they offer what appears to be valuable gold or jewellery, which later turns out to be fake. In some cases, scammers have even escorted victims to ATMs or stores to withdraw cash or buy gift cards.
RCMP say distraction techniques are sometimes used to remove real jewellery from victims and replace it with counterfeit items. Others report having valuables stolen in businesses through similar methods.
Scammers often attempt to gain sympathy by citing personal hardship, pointing to children in their vehicle, or referencing religion and prayer. They’re frequently seen driving rental vehicles with out-of-province plates from Quebec, Ontario, or British Columbia.
