The Swift Current Comprehensive High School wrapped up their athletic season with their year-end banquet.
The Outstanding Graduating Athlete of the Year Awards went to Dani Meyer and Carter Tuplin.
"It just really shows that my hard work paid off after all these years," Meyer said. "It feels like people really believe in me as an athlete, and that feels good.
"The years went by really fast, and they were all really good, and I'm very grateful for all the opportunities I was given."
Meyer had the most athletic points of any grade 12 at the school with 190. She will be playing basketball at Medicine Hat College in the fall.
Tuplin was a multiple-time gold medalist at provincials in track & field.
"It's been full of ups and downs," Tuplin said. "Provincials is always a super tough thing. Just going in there, doing so many events. I just had to stay mentally ready, and that was the biggest part of just keeping my head in the game. Even though I was tired, just pushing through and getting it done."
Tuplin plans to return to the KIJHL and continue his junior hockey career with the Columbia Valley Rockies in September.
The Athletic Leadership Award went to Isabelle Gottselig and Rowan Reimer.
"I just bring up my teammates all the time," Reimer said. "Try and get the best out of them and just work hard myself. Kind of lead by example, I'd say."
He earned 165 career athletic points in soccer, football, track & field, grade 9 & junior basketball.
Reimer is heading to the University of Saskatchewan to compete on the track team and taking environmental biology.
Gottselig faced a different challenge this season as she was limited by a hip injury.
"It's a huge honor," she said of the leadership award. "I think it's from my track season. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to compete in my strong events, which is distance running. Getting this award really means a lot. It's a huge recognition because the whole season I just I was kind of trying to stay in the proper mindset for it, and I helped coach some of the younger kids through their distance workouts and everything like that.
"I try to keep a positive attitude, and it's hard sometimes, but this is just a huge honor and I'm super happy to have it."
She credits her coach Mandy Thompson with helping her get through it.
"I needed Mandy's help quite a few times," Gottselig said. "I came to her with tears more than once, but I just had to understand that was my last year, and I'm not the type of person to quit, even if it's an injury. I had to keep pushing through, and I'm so glad I did."
Gottselig had 159 athletic points from cross country, junior basketball, track & field, junior and senior volleyball.
She will be attending Assiniboine Community College in Brandon to play hockey and take nursing.
They all had similar advice to any future SCCHS athletes.
"I say just come out," Tuplin said. "You just have to try. That's where it all starts. Try something new. Make sure you're there every day, even on the hard days. It's super hard to come out, but it's what makes you better."
Brent Millar was also recognized for being the SWAC/SHSAA Senior Male Coach of the Year.
