Bike Cochrane’s Angry Hawk Enduro continues to grow, attracting over 200 young riders for its fourth annual event.

Held at the Cochrane and District Agricultural Society grounds on June 7, this year’s race welcomed participants aged 3 to 17 from across Alberta, including Canmore, Red Deer, Okotoks, Crowsnest Pass, and Jasper.

The event introduces many riders to mountain bike racing, and for some, their first experience with the enduro format — where only the downhill portions are timed.

“One of the great features of an enduro race,” said race director and Bike Cochrane vice-president Ryan Hopping, “is that parents can ride with their kids. They can help on the climbs, sometimes with a tow strap, and ride behind them on the descents.”

All riders received a custom Angry Hawk medal, a homemade cookie, and a treat bag. One of the highlights remains the strider race, giving the youngest riders a fun and inclusive introduction to competition.

“I’m so proud of our racers, volunteers and community,” said Hopping. “When we started this race four years ago, we had no legal bike trails in town. Now, thanks to our all-volunteer trail crew, we’ve added new trails each year at Buffalo Bean and had six unique stages this year.”

New in 2025 was a partnership with Cochrane BMX, which allowed riders to tackle a special “mystery stage” on the town’s iconic BMX track — a first for many, and a potential entry point into another branch of cycling.

Also debuting this year was an all-ages Dual Slalom event, where racers went head-to-head down parallel trails in a fast-paced showdown of skill and speed.

Support for this year’s race came from title sponsor Bighill Cycle and WestJet, helping the event grow and reach more participants.

Bike Cochrane continues to expand both its trails and events. A full calendar of group rides and races is available at bikecochrane.com/calendar, with trail maps and race results also online.
