A rainy spring-like weekend is on tap for the southwest as summer officially begins.
Precipitation is expected to enter the region Friday, persisting through Sunday night. Chilly summer temperatures will accompany the gloomy weather with highs of 15 C on Saturday and 11 C on Sunday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Crawford Luke said the southwest will experience several rounds of rain.
"You might find there's some downpours at times, you might get a thunderstorm with a downpour, then you might get a few other periods where you have several hours steady, of moderate rain," he said.
Luke believes the region between the Trans-Canada Highway and Yellowhead Highway will receive the most precipitation, as he projects between 20-50 millimetres to accumulate. He added that some localized areas could see 70 millimetres.
"It's going to vary quite a bit just because that's how rain is," he said. "There could be some embedded thunderstorms, so that also tends to vary the amounts."
The potential for thunderstorms exists Saturday with a slight chance Friday night. Luke said hail could be included if thunderstorms happen, but he doesn't expect it.
