Saskatchewan saw a tornado touch down in the southwest yesterday, but a local southwest photographer was there to capture the moment.
Craig Hilts, owner and photographer for Prairie Fire Photography, was on his way back from a tour of Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma when he ran into the twister.
It touched down near Frobisher, with hilts witnessing the funnel cloud touch down and transform a number of times. Hilts had his eye on the forecast and spotted the system before it finished forming.
"Yeah, it turned out to be a pretty amazing day," said Hilts. "I got to see three different tornadoes come of it."
The same system had the tornado transform from a slim, narrow formation, to a separated funnel cloud, to a full and wide tornado all before it finished.
Hilts says that while the photos and experience were amazing, there was some damage.
"It'll be interesting to see what it does get rated, but I do believe it did impact some buildings," said Hilts.
He highlighted that he saw a shed go up, and even some oil field tanks getting blown over.
"Which indicates it was probably a pretty strong tornado," said Hilts.
There was also power line damage as well.
Hilts was parked a distance away from the carnage. With years of experience, he is an expert and does not encourage others to attempt his style of photography without prior knowledge. Images of this tornado and other weather phenomena are available on his store page.
