Soccer in Estevan has had a good run over the spring, with a few teams placing well in events over the last couple of months. That includes championship cups, provincials, and more, which saw Estevan teams compete hard for a chance at the title.
Estevan Youth Soccer's Vice President, Derek Mercer, talks about some of the recent successes for the U13 Estevan soccer team.
"We had our U13s attend the SaskCup, the 7v7 provincials in Saskatoon. So we sent the team to that, and it was a great experience. They had a really good experience, the level of play is eye-opening for the kids, and it's sort of what we want them to see is how good soccer can be played, and we want to aspire to reach those levels."
Another team attended a SaskCup event, with some older Estevan players heading to the field.
"This past weekend, we sent a team to the 11v11 SAS Cup in Saskatoon for the U15-17 division," said Mercer. "We played three games against three very good teams, competed well, we didn't make it to the playoffs, but all the kids came away feeling that we competed and that we did well, and they were excited."
The U15-17 team was made up of more than just Estevan players, with other communities also contributing to their play.
They ended up receiving the fair play award, which Mercer called a great comment on how the team conducted themselves over the competition.
