A lot of turnover, but some impressive new faces at the Swift Current Comp. Colts football spring camp.

"Really, really athletic," said Colts Offensive Coordinator Marcus Kourie. "We've got to come a long ways football IQ-wise, but athletic. We have a lot of athletes that if you put the ball in their hands they're going to do something really, really special."

Some major changes on the offensive side of the ball include Nate Siemens potentially taking over at quarterback.

"The new quarterback, probably going to be our quarterback in the fall was projected to be our best receiver this year," Kourie said. "We just had our other quarterback, Owen Sletten, have an opportunity down south, so we lose a returning quarterback.

"The number 1 running back is back in Jake Woods, and he's going to be a focal point of our offence. Offensive line, we had quite a bit of turnover, and receiver, quite a bit of turnover. There's a lot of learning left to do."

There are some changes coming on the defensive side of the ball too.

"We lost some pretty talented guys," said Defensive Coordinator Alex Booth. "Zach PotterXander Nicholson, a few others... but we've got a lot of young kids. There are kids who are going into grade 10 in the fall who had great camps. We've got a couple of new guys in grade 12 and a couple of grade 8s that are coming into the high school that I'm really excited about, and were holding their own, which is really exciting for the future."

Changing personnel doesn't mean a change in how the Colts play defensively.

"I think it's going to be Colts football defence," Booth said. "We're going to keep things simple. We're going to hit hard. We're going to move downhill and keep everything in front of us. It's just about the energy. Wanting to be out there, wanting to hit, wanting to play a physical game, that's how to win a high school football game."

Meanwhile, a new quarterback and a new head coach in Andrew Herrick could lead to some new strategies on offence.

"I think it's going to change a little bit," Kourie said. "Coach Herrick is a super smart offensive football guy. Having him help me out will be very advantageous for us in the fall. Simplifying stuff, maybe putting a little bit of window dressing on simple plays to try and get miscommunication on defence, so I'm excited to see where that gets us."

Derek Murdoch stepped back from head coach to assistant coach of the Colts after nearly 20 years in charge of the program.
