The skies may have been grey, but spirits were soaring at this year's Windscape Kite Festival.
International kite flyers and local families gather in Swift Current on Saturday and Sunday to celebrate community, culture, and creativity.
Christine Ciona, one of the volunteer coordinators for the event, says the festival featured kite enthusiasts from across Canada, the United States, and the Philippines.
"Even though the skies are a little cloudy and we've had a bit of rain, we're prepared for the outdoors," said Ciona. "All day long, we've got flyers flying their kites, weather permitting."
The festival, which has become a staple in Swift Current's summer calendar, offers more than just kite flying. Families can enjoy a wide range of hands-on activities inside the children's tent, including button-making, kite crafting, and a special legacy project: a community-built kite arch made from individually designed Eddy kites.
"It's a great way to be together with your friends and family," she said. "Get outside, do a little walking, bring your umbrella. We have a beautiful tent—you can stay under the tent and enjoy."
With over 200 volunteers donning rubber boots and gumboots, the event is a testament to the community's dedication and resilience. Local support has been instrumental in bringing the festival to life, from organizing logistics to providing food and entertainment.
"This gives something for the whole province to celebrate," said Ciona. "We have a beautiful prairie landscape and beautiful skies.
“It creates community and connection, and that makes people happy."
The cultural aspect of the festival is also front and centre.
Alongside the international kite flyers, the event features live music as part of the Long Day's Night Festival, adding an artistic flair to the weekend's festivities.
"It's not just about kite flying," Ciona added. "It's an art and culture phenomenon. A kite isn't just a kite. This is more than just a kite."
